Electricity in Belmont

The Town of Belmont owns its electric utility, Belmont Light, formerly ‘Belmont Municipal Light Department’ (BMLD). Municipal utilities operate differently from investor-owned utilities. They are valued for their direct involvement with communities they serve and their level of service. They (and the residents they serve) may or may not be able to participate in state energy-efficiency programs. Sustainable Belmont continues to work with the municipal light department to adopt greater energy conservation measures, as it has for many years. Currently, the municipal light department offers the following sustainability measures to residents:

  • rebates for some Energy Star appliances
  • energy audits for homeowners
  • the option to purchase Renewable Energy Credits to expand use of renewable energy

A 2007 BMLD survey of residents shows strong support for energy conservation.
