On June 21, 2010, Sustainable Belmont attended a tour of a Belmont two-family house in the process of receiving a deep energy retrofit. The tour was given by contractors Alex Cheimets of Synergy Companies (www.zero-energy-home.com, 781-648-7177) and Paul Eldrenkamp of Byggmeister (www.Byggmeister.com, 617-527-7871).
The duplex has a high-efficiency gas heater. The walls are insulated to R-40 and roof to R-60. Super-efficient triple-insulated windows, a heat-recovering ventilator to circulate air, a solar water heater, and a 4 kw solar array are being installed. Total energy usage for the two units of housing should equal less than 10,000 kwh per year.
Thirty-eight people attended the tour. We thank Alex Cheimets and Paul Eldrenkamp for a very interesting evening. Many thanks also to the Brownsberger family for allowing us to view their home. (Photos by Judy Otto and Jan Kruse.)
